A pioneering course to strengthen project management competence in the built environment

BESA, in partnership with Provek, is launching a new industry-first programme helping project professionals meet evolving building safety and competence requirements

Provek, one of the UK’s leading project management training and consultancy providers, has partnered with the Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) to develop Managing Projects in the Built Environment (MPBE) – a professional development programme created specifically for experienced project professionals working across the built environment.

Why now?

The new qualification addresses a growing need within the construction and built environment sectors, where organisations are under increasing pressure to demonstrate competence, compliance and effective governance. According to the UK Construction Compliance Index 2026, one in five construction businesses has been marked down or excluded from tender opportunities because they could not provide up-to-date compliance information.

Developed in response to the significant industry reforms introduced following the Grenfell Tower tragedy, MPBE reflects the sector’s increasing emphasis on building safety, accountability and professional competence. The Building Safety Act, together with emerging competency frameworks, has highlighted the importance of project managers having a deeper understanding of their responsibilities in delivering safe and compliant projects.

Despite the critical role project managers play, there has been no dedicated qualification focused specifically on the demands of managing projects in the built environment. MPBE has been created to fill that gap, providing professionals with the knowledge, confidence and practical expertise needed to succeed in an increasingly regulated industry.

Endorsed by APM, the chartered professional body for Project Management

The programme is APM Endorsed, demonstrating that its content has been independently reviewed and aligned with recognised professional standards for project management competence

Aligned with the Competence Framework for Project Managers in the Built Environment

Key topics of the two-day course include Building safety and the regulatory environment, Governance and assurance, Risk management and decision-making, Procurement and commercial considerations, Information management and the digital golden thread, Stakeholder engagement and Sustainability and long-term value creation.

These areas align with the Competence Framework for Project Managers in the Built Environment, supporting professionals in demonstrating capabilities that are increasingly valued by employers, clients and regulators.

The programme also complements established qualifications such as APM PMQ by extending core project management knowledge into the specialist context of the built environment.

As organisations continue to prioritise competence, compliance and safer buildings, MPBE offers a practical way for project professionals to enhance their expertise and demonstrate their commitment to industry best practice.

Testimonials

“BESA’s partnership with Provek demonstrates their commitment to providing applied project knowledge across the building engineering services sector. The new qualification is an important step in supporting project managers to deliver projects to the right standards.

It offers built environment-specific content that complements APM’s Project Management Qualification, helping learners connect core project management practice with the standards, risks and responsibilities that shape successful delivery in the sector.”

Gill Hancock, Head of Technical Content, APM

“The role project managers working in the built environment is evolving. The introduction of the Building Safety Act, increased focus on competence, and growing expectations around governance and accountability mean project managers need a broader understanding of safety, compliance and risk throughout the project lifecycle.

We have built this course and qualification in close collaboration with project management specialists Provek and technical input from Mellor Bromley to ensure the content closely matches the additional demands now being placed on project managers who are playing an increasingly pivotal role in delivering key safety and sustainability measures.”

Jill Nicholls, Director of Competence and Compliance, BESA

“Project managers sit at the heart of safe delivery in the built environment. Through our partnership with BESA, we’ve created a practical, rigorous qualification that enables them to demonstrate exactly that and equips project managers with the knowledge, skills and confidence to meet the expectations of the Building Safety Act and the Competence Framework for Project Managers in the Built Environment. We’ve developed a relevant and impactful solution that will help raise standards, strengthen professionalism and ultimately contribute to safer outcomes across the industry.”
