Managing Projects in the Built Environment

Build the competence needed to manage projects within today's built environment

The built environment is facing increasing regulatory scrutiny, evolving competence expectations and greater accountability for building safety outcomes.

Provek has partnered with the Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) to develop Managing Projects in the Built Environment (MPBE) – a professional development programme designed specifically for experienced project and programme managers seeking to develop competence within the context of the modern built environment.

Mapped to the built environment-specific content of the Competence Framework for Project Managers in the Built Environment in England, and aligned with the competence agenda supported by the Industry Competence Committee, this qualification helps learners develop the additional knowledge and understanding required to operate effectively within the built environment regulatory landscape.

Rather than revisiting core project management principles, the course focuses on the areas that have been identified as partially covered or absent from traditional project management qualifications, including building safety, risk assurance, procurement decision-making, information management, stakeholder engagement and sustainability.

For project managers already holding formal project management qualifications and practical experience, this course provides a structured route to strengthen competence, support professional development and demonstrate alignment with recognised industry expectations.

Pre-requisites:

Participants should have existing project management experience before enrolling. Although it is not a mandatory prerequisite, it would be beneficial, to already hold a qualification such as the APM PMQ, as core project management principles are not covered in this course. Together, the two qualifications demonstrate your competence.

All delegates are encouraged to complete a short 25 minute online Project Management Assessment (PMA) before starting the programme.

The PMA is a tool to help you identify your personal strengths and development opportunities. It provides a personalised report that benchmarks project management knowledge and experience against industry standards. It also helps you understand your experience in project management, ensuring you can gain maximum benefit from the programme and supporting successful completion.

Pre-course study:

Familiarisation with the Competency Framework for Project Managers in the Built Environment (which is provided following enrolment) and Building Safety Act.

Approx 4-5 hours.

Why take this course

The introduction of the Building Safety Act, increased focus on competence and growing expectations around governance and accountability mean project managers need a broader understanding of safety, compliance and risk throughout the project lifecycle.

The Managing Projects in the Built Environment qualification complements the APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ) by addressing built environment-specific competence requirements identified within the Competence Framework for Project Managers in the Built Environment in England. Together, the two qualifications demonstrate your competence.

Benefits

This programme will help you:

  • Develop competence against the built environment-specific content of the Competence Framework for Project Managers in the Built Environment in England.
  • Build your understanding of the Building Safety Act 2022 and the wider regulatory environment.
  • Strengthen your ability to identify, manage and escalate life-safety-critical risks.
  • Improve decision-making around procurement, commercial considerations and project governance.
  • Understand the application of the Golden Thread and safety-critical information management.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to professional competence and best practice in the built environment.
  • Complement existing qualifications such as the APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ).
  • Gain learning that is directly relevant to projects within the built environment rather than generic project management principles.

Why now?

Building safety reforms have increased expectations around competence, governance and accountability across the built environment.

This qualification helps project managers understand their role within this evolving landscape and build the knowledge needed to support safer project outcomes.

APM-Endorsed

The MPBE course is endorsed by APM, reflecting meeting the high standards set by the project profession’s chartered organisation, ensuring that learning is recognised, relevant and trusted.
