This half-day course is an introduction to planning and estimating a project.

The course is based on established project management principles which can be applied in any project environment.

The overall objective of this course is to provide delegates with a series of practical steps and associated tools that support effective planning and estimating within a project. Subjects covered include:

  • Planning and estimating in context
  • Integration of planning for time, cost, scope and resource
  • Planning steps
  • The project definition document
  • The importance of the project manager ‘owning’ the plan
  • Challenging contractor’s plans – questions to ask
  • The use of baselines
  • Building the schedule from the scope
  • Scheduling techniques
  • Estimating principles and techniques
  • Estimating and the budget
  • Humans factors and bias that affect estimates

Each candidate will be provided with a handbook containing the slides, workshop exercises, a recommended reading list on the subject, other courses and qualifications available as well as free access to selected videos on our unique PM Channel.

Course specification

Who should attend:

This course is suitable for a wide range of delegates including those who are relatively new to project management, those who apply planning and estimating and wish to refresh their skills and techniques and those who are in a management position supporting projects.

Duration:

Half day.

Timings:

The course will either start at 09.00 and finish at 12.30 or 13.30 to 17.00. Breaks will be scheduled throughout the course.

The timing and structure of the virtual course is designed to give delegates a healthy balance between screen time and personal breaks.

Examination:

This course does not comprise a formal examination.

Course style:

The course is participative in nature consisting of presentation sessions, discussions, group exercises and examples. It is suitable for both face-to-face classroom learning, as well as virtual learning through Zoom or MS Teams.

Pre-requisites:

At least a basic knowledge of project management and a minimum of one year’s experience in a project or programme management environment.

Pre-course study:

No pre-course study required.
