Application Workshop

The Application Workshop is designed to make sure learning is put into practice in the workplace

The formal qualification based project management training has many benefits to organisations and employees. It can however often be theoretical in nature and focused on gaining a qualification rather than applying the learning in the workplace. This can limit the effectiveness of the training and leave learners unsure how to translate the theory into practice. This 1 day project management application workshop is designed to act as an additional day to the formal exam based training.

At Provek we run many formal training courses for organisations leading to a qualification, such as the Association for Project Management (APM)’s Project Fundamentals Qualification (PFQ) and the Project Management Qualification (PMQ).

While these courses include many practical exercises, and are interactive throughout, there is inevitably a tendency to focus on the examination. Once the delegates are back in the workplace, it is important they have time and support to be able to put what they learn into practice if your organisation is to maximise its investment in the training.

As a result, we have developed an application workshop to complement our formal exam-based training. The workshop is designed to help make sure delegates understand how to apply what they have learned.

The facilitated workshop focuses on applying key project management tools and techniques to a comprehensive project scenario. Delegates are allocated into small teams and expected to ‘manage’ the project from receipt of the initial business case through to the post project review. Additional ‘project’ information is given on completion of each task which allows the next task to be performed.

The delegates learn a lot about themselves and others in the team. There are moments throughout the day where the delegates review the work of the other teams and reflect on their own. The emphasis is on reflection and constructive feedback.

Delegates have found the workshop extremely useful and felt better equipped to go back into the workplace and be more confident in applying what they have learned. Many echoed a recent delegate who said that the workshop ‘brought everything together and make sense.
