Tell us about your role and what challenges you faced before starting the programme?
I was already managing small projects in my role as an Operations Coordinator, acting as the link between different departments but I often lacked the tools and structure to move projects forward effectively. Ideas would stall midway because I couldn’t engage all the right people or keep the momentum going.
Why did you choose the Level 4 Associate Project Manager Apprenticeship?
My manager asked if I wanted to progress, project management was already in the back of my mind. I reached out to HR, who suggested the apprenticeship. It looked like exactly what I needed, and once my manager gave me the green light, I was ready to go.
What did you enjoy most about the programme?
From the start, the programme was engaging and practical. I loved learning about tools such as risk management, setting deadlines, creating RACI charts, and building communication plans. These gave me structure and confidence in my approach. One highlight was reviving a project that had been on hold for over a year. Before the apprenticeship, my attempt to restart it had failed and I couldn’t engage the stakeholders. This time, I applied what I had learned and it was incredibly rewarding to see the project back on track, hitting deadlines, and becoming one of our biggest successes of the year.
How has the programme supported you in your role and career progression?
The programme has transformed the way I work. I now run projects that progress smoothly, meet deadlines, and deliver real results. I can anticipate challenges before they arise by assessing risks and planning proactively. My role has evolved, with my Head of Department giving me responsibility to build a portfolio of projects and lead on RACIs, communication plans, and resource management.
What challenges have you faced during the apprenticeship? How have you overcome these?
Balancing the apprenticeship with my day job was challenging. Even though I loved the learning, finding time for assignments alongside a busy role took discipline.
My line manager was incredibly supportive, giving time to study and complete tasks, and my trainer Christian was always available, offering extra sessions and answering questions whenever I needed.
What advice would you give to anyone considering enrolling on to the programme?
The idea of a 15-month apprenticeship can feel daunting, especially if you’re already busy. My advice is to commit to it fully. Once you get started, you find ways to balance everything, and the reward at the end is worth it. Go for it – it’s challenging, but it’s a gamechanger for your career.
